This award-winning Lerner and Loewe musical is based on the King Arthur legend and his Knights of the Round Table as adapted from the T.H. White tetralogy novel “The Once and Future King”. Featuring a superb score played out amid the pageantry of Camelot, the story centers on the affair between Arthur’s wife, Guenevere, and his great friend, Sir Lancelot, beautifully captured in numbers as “If Ever I Would Leave You” and “I Loved You Once in Silence.” The title song subsequently joined Arthurian legend with American political mythology. CAMELOT played for 873 performances on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre and for 518 performances in London at the Drury Lane Theatre. It starred Richard Burton, Julie Andrews, Robert Goulet and Roddy McDowall. It has been revived on Broadway several times, most recently in 1993 when it played for 56 performances at the George Gershwin Theatre starring Robert Goulet as King Arthur.
The musical will be presented in a concert-style setting with on-stage orchestration and an emphasis on musicality and story-telling. All scenes and musical numbers will be performed, but in a less conventional, more minimal manner. The performers will have the script and score with them throughout the show. The concert-style format also offers more opportunity for non-traditional casting in terms of appearance and age. Actors are asked to prepare 16 bars of a song and may be asked to sing from the show. Bring sheet music in the appropriate key. An accompanist will be provided. Actors may be asked to read from the script.
