THE VELVETEEN RABBIT
Directed by BRENT E. MARTY
Though the most modest toy in the nursery, the Velveteen Rabbit earns the love of a young boy and learns about the joys and pain of becoming “Real.” Margery Williams’ classic book springs to magical life in this enchanting musical about love, loss and self-esteem. This summer production is a highlight of the Jr. Civic season. Open to ages 6-18, the annual full-scale musical attracts children and youth from throughout the metro area and affords them the opportunity to participate in a professionally staffed, technically supported mainstage experience. Previous productions include last year's highly successful Willy Wonka Junior in addition to such other favorites as Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Charlotte's Web, Twelve Dancing Princesses, Rumpelstiltskin and the American premiere of The Curious Quest for the Sandman's Sand.

Open Auditions:
Monday and Tuesday, April 12 & 13, 2010 at 4:00pm (open to ages 6-18). NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY! Performing experience not required and participants need not be enrolled in Civic Theatre's education programs to audition. Based on the book by Margery Williams, The Velveteen Rabbit follows the adventures of a toy rabbit as he tries to become real. On his way, he encounters “top banana” Nana who rules the nursery with an iron hand and other more arrogant toys in the closet. The story features an ensemble of singing and dancing blocks, toys and bunnies and is sprinkled with songs that chronicle the magical transformation of a cherished toy from stuffed bunny to real live rabbit.

An accompanist will be provided. Wear appropriate clothing for a brief movement audition. PRINCIPAL ROLES: The Narrator, Nana, Velveteen Rabbit and Little Boy. ADDITIONAL ROLES: Aunt Sally, Uncle Fred, Doctor, Good Fairy, Skin Horse, tin soldiers, building blocks and many additional toys and rabbits.
